Symbol Technologies designed its barcode scanners. Solectron and SCI assembled its products. There were quality defect problems on the production line. AMREP Mexico placed its source inspection teams in the factory to inspect, correct and to find out the sources of the problems. Some problems originated from another source of component supply which was assembled by SCI Maine. Symbol sent experienced AMREP Mexican source inspectors from Mexico to stop the problem in Maine. Our supplier QC program for Symbol ran for 2 years.

When the Supplier’s Management is corrupted. 
A hard disk drive company was acquiring its HDD magnetic heads from its supplier in Penang, Malaysia. We sent in a team to sort out the quality problems relating to magnetic heads.  AMREP inspectors could never rectify the quality problems! We trace the problems backwards to its source. Parts for the magnetic heads were coming in from factories owned by the supplier’s employed managers. We traced the reasons for the continuous incoming poor quality and unsolvable quality solutions plus the resistance for corrective actions and quality improvements. Our work for this HDD company ran on for 5 years from Singapore, Malaysia, India, Thailand and the Philippines

Spending too much on reducing poor quality the wrong way!! Sometimes it is hard to help a customer. We had the largest Mexican company selling plumbing and faucets accessories using us to check on the quality of incoming products. There was a high 20% rejects found on the delivered stocks in the warehouse. AMREP Mexico suggested that the customer should inspect the products in China where the Taiwanese company had the factory. AMREP China went to the factory in China with the customer’s Mexican Manager. Not only did the Taiwanese manager was ready to boot AMREP out, it demanded that inspection can only be done by a Mexican who can speak Mandarin. We have not come across a Mexican engineer who can speak Mandarin, or understand Chinese engineering lingo! Too afraid to push off its fearsome supplier, our customer continues to use us in Mexico to throw out the bad stuff and waiting hopefully for its supplier to provide free replacements.

Buying from an Agent and Supplier problems. The customer is a Tier 2  automotive supplier of forged wheel parts and axles to Ford and Daimler Chrysler. He buys from a US agent who traded with a Chinese foundry. Our customer did not trust its agent irrespective that he had been buying from this agent for many years from suppliers within the US and where our customer had better control on quality. In China he had no control and his agent could not control the quality in China. As expected the products received were “out of specs”. AMREP sent its metallurgical specialist in China to correct the production problems.
Lesson Learned?
Next time send in AMREP to audit your supplier’s manufacturing capabilities before signing a contract with the agent. Or have your trading agent sell you the products but have AMREP inspect before delivery.
